It’s all about the whales in Eden.

Eden has been a surprising place. During federation it was seriously being considered to be the capital of Australia given its very deep harbour and proximity to Melbourne & Sydney. The limestone plains of Canberra won out in the end.

Eden was well known for its whaling in Twofold Bay. More extraordinary, the relationship between a pod of killer whales working together with humans to round up and kill the baleen whales.

The Orcas would tire the baleen whales, herd them into the bay and alert the whalers. They in turn would harpoon the whale then allow the killer whales to eat out their favourite parts, mainly the tongue and cheeks before the whalers attend to the blubber for oil.

As humans and killer whales have roughly the same life span this relationship continued for 40-50 years with the same pod. It is claimed the whales knew the men and if one accidentally fell overboard during the chase the killer whales would surround and protect the man.

There is a ton of artwork in all forms celebrating the killer whales.
