Fuel Injection Pump

Over the last few months we have been getting a bit of Diesel fuel under our engine, it started with a little and got to be a lot more than I was comfortable with.

Diesel fuel under the engine

So I talked with Ian Hughes the local Volvo mechanic to get it removed and serviced but he couldn’t look at it for several weeks, so I decided that I was going to have to do it myself ๐Ÿ˜”

Injection pump

I replaced the timing belt a few months ago so I knew the basics of how to lock the drive shaft, cam shaft and marking the injection pump to (hopefully) keep the engine alignment correct ๐Ÿคž

Timing belt, top right pulley is injection pump pulley

I locked the engine in position, removed some pulleys, some covers, the drive belt, and then removed the injection pump pulley.

Then I removed the fuel and return hoses, throttle cable, emergency stop rope and the lines to each of the injectors, lastly I removed the three bolts holding the pump in position but despite some hard taps it wouldn’t come free ๐Ÿ˜• after a trip up to see Ian I found that there were two extra bolts that I’d missed, that made me feel a bit silly.

So after removing the two extra bolts the pump came away easily (oh there was another line I’d missed)

The pump is now at the Diesel injection service place in Cambridge and we are easily awaiting its return to start the process of reinstalling it.
